Northland Forestry Nursery Limited chooses to employ local people for both for its full time and part time staff. We engage five full time workers and another twenty plus seasonal workers over winter (harvesting) season. With the experience of working seasonally in the nursery many past employees have moved on to full time work in other industries.

Entering the Balance Environmental Farm Award competition in 2012 the business was recognised for its excellence in people management, environment sensitivity and innovative achievements. Finalist for the overall award and winner of:

  • Balance Nutrient Management Award

  • Hill Laboratories Harvest Award

  • Massey Discovery Award (for Innovation)

2021 sees the first year collaborating with Harvest Northland, a locally organized labour pool which trains local people to be work ready. We are able to offer work to these predominantly orchard and pack house workers, filling an employment gap for them which also coincides with our peak demand for staff.

This business was a winner in various categories of the 2012 Balance Environmental Farm Award competition in the categories of excellence in people management, environment sensitivity and for innovative achievement.

Whenever possible we use reusable packaging for our product and repair broken packaging whenever we can, to maximize its’ use. Some of cartons have been in use for over 15 years.

On smaller one off orders it does make sense to use plastic bags as the cost, time and fuel involved in returning packaging has to be taken into consideration.
